The Methodist Church in Dersingham was adorned from the outside in with lovely arrays of colourful flowers and visitors were encouraged for several days as the month of May came to a close.
Regrettably for much of the duration of the Flower Festival the weather was not very inspiring but the sun did shine sporadically and visitors were not deterred.
Visitor numbers naturally increased over the weekend period. I finally got to visit on the last day of the Festival and found a quaint and attractive little church.
The highly colourful displays had been artfully crafted together by members of the congregation and were designed to mirror many popular biblical themes.
My personal favourite was the altar display which conjured up images of the cross and utilised many of the vibrant and familiar colours of my own church. I also felt it made the altar in this simple church come to life.
Just some of the floral themes included:
- the feeding of the five thousand
- the gift of gold by the wise men on the birth of Jesus
- the purple robe worn by Jesus when he was scourged by Pilate’s soldiers
- hangings in the gardens of King Xerxes
- Rahab and the scarlet cord
- gifts of gold and silver for Rebekah (wife of Isaac)
- angels clothed in white
- the green pastures referenced in the Lord is My Shepherd
- lips that speak knowledge
- all colours of materials required for the tabernacle
