The 2016 Christmas Swim was like no other for me in that I ended up participating! Yes me who hates being cold and wet like nobody I know. It happened quite by accident … I decided to focus on trying out Facebook LIVE for this year’s Swim as my own camera had a problem and my son wanted to use his new Christmas present and take his own photos of the Swim rather than lend it to me.
Together we pushed through the crowds in a bid to find our perfect spot. Robbie and I separated, agreeing to meet on the beach. The crowds were lively and the atmosphere was buzzing as usual. No doubt fuelled by the very comfortable weather conditions.
I trudged out into the water to get into position hoping for the best with technology. I was initially amazed to see that the wifi on my phone was working on the beach – Three had obviously made a special effort for Christmas Day – and then I was off doing my bit to cover this long standing local Christmas tradition. Once I had taken in the lively kite surfing displays happening all around me and the hordes of spectators on the beach the swimmers were lined up and charging at me and I found myself following them. Soon the water was over the top of my boots and realisation dawned that I was almost up to the marker where the swimmers had to cross to qualify as having taken part. In a split second I thought “I may as well do the Christmas Swim and be done with it” and so I did. I must admit I hesitated a little at the thought of ducking into the water but the Round Table men holding the banner obligingly raised it for me and thus I had done the Christmas Swim and returned to the beach along with everyone else. My legs were pretty cold and red on return but otherwise it was not too bad. To be fair, it was a pretty mild winter’s day so I got off lightly. (The video taken can be seen if you scroll down this page.)
It has been suggested that I may as well do the Christmas Swim next year now. Well I have learned to never say never having said I would NEVER do the Christmas Swim! So watch this space, you never know what is possible.
We will post more of Robbie’s photos and the few I took on a Facebook album for Hunstanton On Line.
